Insurance Coverage for NeuroStar TMS Therapy in Richmond
If a physician has diagnosed you with major depressive disorder or obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), it can feel frustrating and exhausting when your initial attempts at treatment do not lead to meaningful progress. However, you are not out of options. Many patients have found success in managing these conditions with NeuroStar transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) therapy.
When considering any new medical treatment, it is natural to have questions about costs and insurance coverage. At Bloom Health Centers, we will help you understand what to expect regarding insurance coverage for NeuroStar TMS therapy in Richmond.
Insurance Coverage for TMS Therapy
After it received FDA clearance, most insurance companies cover NeuroStar TMS therapy to treat major depressive disorder and major depressive disorder with anxious depression. Most recently, many insurance companies also cover TMS therapy to treat OCD as well. If you are wondering whether you are eligible for insurance coverage for NeuroStar TMS treatment, many policies require you to meet the following qualifications:
- At least two antidepressant medications have not relieved depression or OCD symptoms
- Psychotherapy has not worked
- You are at least 15 years old
Our clinicians can collaborate with you to determine if you would benefit from TMS therapy in Richmond and begin working with your insurance to obtain coverage. We want to make sure you know where you stand with your insurance, and that you are aware of any costs that might be associated with this advanced treatment.
Improving Your Chances of Insurance Coverage
When seeking insurance coverage for NeuroStar TMS treatment, it is often helpful to have detailed records and documentation showing your progress, or the lack of progress, with other mental health treatments to show that you meet any eligibility requirements. Additionally, some insurance providers may have minimum requirements for the length of time you received a treatment prior to trying other ones. Following the specific conditions set by your insurance provider can make the approval process run smoother and allow you to fully focus on getting better.
How Does NeuroStar TMS Therapy Work?
NeuroStar TMS therapy uses magnetic pulses to stimulate areas of the brain involved in mood regulation in patients with certain types of depression and OCD. Your provider uses a treatment coil to allow the magnetic field to reach several centimeters into your brain’s left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, the area responsible for mood regulation.
Once inside of the brain, the magnetic fields activate cells that release neurotransmitters, including dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin. Supporting healthier neurotransmitter activity is often helpful for managing conditions such as depression and OCD that have not responded to other treatments.
This minimally invasive procedure offers high success rates, allowing you to fully engage in the aspects of your life that you find most meaningful. It is also convenient to fit into your schedule since it is an outpatient procedure, and you can continue with your regular routine afterward. Our team at Bloom Health Centers in Richmond could help you fully explore all the benefits, including insurance coverage, that NeuroStar TMS therapy offers.
