Good Candidates for NeuroStar TMS Therapy

As you consider different treatment options for your mental health concerns, it is important to understand what might make you a good candidate for each option available to you. You may be a good candidate for NeuroStar transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) treatment in Richmond if you experience symptoms of:

  • Major depressive disorder (MDD)
  • Treatment-resistant depression
  • Persistent depressive disorder
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
  • Clinical depression

As you contemplate whether NeuroStar TMS therapy is right for you, you should consider how happy you are with your current treatment options, how effective your medication is, and whether you experience any side effects.

You might also consider your age, as individuals with a diagnosis of adolescent MDD may be eligible for NeuroStar TMS therapy if they are at least 15 years old. As you consider what treatment option to pursue, it is important that you have realistic expectations for what to expect and how the results may manifest.

What NeuroStar Candidates Can Expect

NeuroStar TMS therapy uses electromagnetic fields to target specific, underperforming regions of your brain. It does through magnetic pulses that stimulate activity in targeted brain regions, supporting improved neural function over time. This helps minimize your mental health symptoms and allows you to return to your desired day-to-day activities with a renewed vigor.

NeuroStar TMS therapy typically involves sessions five days a week for about six to seven weeks, with each session lasting around 20 minutes. When you arrive for your therapy, we will seat you in a comfortable chair where you can relax as our clinicians place and activate the NeuroStar TMS device. You may feel a slight tapping on your scalp, and we can provide ear protection if needed. It may take four to six weeks for you to begin to feel the results of your treatment.
