Candidates for NeuroStar TMS Therapy in Winchester
If your depression symptoms have not improved the way you had hoped, it can be discouraging to keep repeating the same steps and getting the same results. Candidates for NeuroStar TMS therapy in Winchester, VA are often people who need a structured, non-invasive option that does not rely on systemic medication effects.
At Bloom Health Centers, we can review your health history, mental health needs, and your ability to follow the treatment schedule to help you understand whether NeuroStar TMS therapy is right for you.
Is NeuroStar TMS Right for You?
When it comes to candidacy, NeuroStar TMS therapy is FDA-cleared for major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults who have not achieved satisfactory improvement from prior antidepressant medication in their current depressive episode. It is also cleared to decrease anxiety symptoms in adults with anxious depression. NeuroStar TMS therapy is also intended as an adjunct for adult patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and as an adjunct for MDD in adolescent patients ages 15–21.
You may be a strong candidate for NeuroStar TMS in Winchester if your diagnosis matches an FDA-cleared indication and your symptoms are affecting your daily functioning, especially if prior medication trials did not bring adequate relief or produced side effects that made treatment difficult. We recommend attending sessions consistently throughout the full treatment course so the therapy's cumulative effects will work as designed.
What Does an Eligibility Review Cover?
Your NeuroStar TMS eligibility review focuses on safety, diagnosis, and a realistic plan you can follow. We review your symptoms, prior treatments, and medical history. Our team will ask whether you have any non-removable conductive metal in or near your head, which is a key consideration for NeuroStar TMS treatment. We also talk through what you want to improve first, such as sleep, motivation, focus, or daily functioning, so your care has clear targets. If addressing OCD is part of your plan, we confirm that you understand NeuroStar is used as an adjunct therapy for OCD, meaning you should continue any other treatments you are currently using.
What NeuroStar TMS Treatment Looks Like
If you qualify for NeuroStar TMS, we can begin your therapy at our Winchester location. A standard course of treatment typically consists of sessions five days a week for about seven weeks. Many people begin noticing changes during weeks four to six. We help you track a few simple markers, such as sleep quality, energy, and concentration, so progress is easier to recognize (Dunner DL, et al. (2014). J Clin Psychiatry, 75(12):1394-1401).
The magnetic pulses are generally well-tolerated, though some people experience mild scalp discomfort, especially early in the treatment course. If you notice discomfort, tell our clinician so they can optimize the positioning and settings for your comfort while staying aligned with your treatment plan.
