How Does NeuroStar TMS Therapy Work?

During your treatment sessions, our clinicians place a specialized coil gently against your scalp. This coil delivers precise magnetic pulses that stimulate nerve cells in the prefrontal cortex, an area that research finds is often underactive in people with depression.

NeuroStar TMS treatment operates by activating these nerve cells, encouraging healthier communication between brain regions involved in mood, motivation, and emotional regulation. Over time, repeated stimulation can help rebalance activity patterns associated with depressive symptoms.

What Happens During a Typical Session?

A NeuroStar TMS session usually lasts about 20 minutes. You will be awake and seated in a comfortable chair throughout the session. NeuroStar TMS therapy works without anesthesia or sedation, and you can return to normal activities immediately afterward. Common sensations include light tapping or warmth on the scalp during stimulation, which are generally mild and tend to decrease as your treatment progresses. Our care team monitors your comfort closely and adjusts settings as needed.
