How NeuroStar TMS Therapy in Towson Works
As you look for options to address depression, you may feel unsure about what happens during newer treatments such as transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). You might wonder whether the process is uncomfortable, time-consuming, or hard to fit into daily life. For many people, not understanding how a therapy works can be a huge obstacle in pursuing the care they need.
At Bloom Health Centers, we believe clarity helps you feel more at ease. Below, we explain the basics about how NeuroStar TMS therapy works at our Towson location and how it may help when other approaches have not brought enough relief.
How Does NeuroStar TMS Therapy Work?
Unlike standard antidepressant therapy, NeuroStar TMS therapy uses magnetic pulses, not drugs, to activate areas of the brain that are underactive in people with depression. Our clinicians deliver these pulses through a treatment coil placed gently against your head. The treatment does not involve surgery, anesthesia, or medication, and you remain awake and alert throughout each session.
Our clinicians begin with an intake appointment to understand your symptoms, treatment history, and individual mental health needs. We then use this information to guide where we apply the magnetic pulses so the treatment aligns with your brain’s response patterns.
NeuroStar TMS therapy is FDA-cleared for adults with major depressive disorder who have not experienced sufficient improvement from antidepressant medications, as well as for patients with treatment-resistant depression, anxious depression, or OCD. Research shows that repeated sessions over several weeks could support changes in brain activity linked to mood. Our team ensures you understand each step so the process feels clear and manageable.
What Happens During NeuroStar TMS Sessions?
Each NeuroStar TMS session typically lasts about 20 minutes, and you sit comfortably in a chair, like in a regular appointment. Our therapists position the treatment coil on your head, and you may hear clicking sounds as it delivers the magnetic pulses. Many people describe the sensation as a light tapping feeling on the scalp.
During sessions, you can talk with our clinical team, listen to music, watch TV, or simply relax. You do not need recovery time afterward, so you can return to your usual activities immediately. When explaining how we implement NeuroStar TMS treatment in Towson, we often emphasize how it fits into daily routines without requiring major disruptions.
Patients typically receive NeuroStar TMS therapy five days a week for seven to nine weeks, depending on whether we are treating depression or OCD. At Bloom Health Centers, we monitor how you are feeling throughout treatment and adjust your care plan to support your mental health needs.
Most people notice gradual changes in mood, energy, or focus over time rather than immediate shifts. We take time to check in with you regularly so you feel supported and informed during the process. We can also discuss additional treatment options that complement TMS when appropriate.
