Benefits of NeuroStar TMS Therapy

NeuroStar TMS therapy is often helpful for patients in Charlottesville with certain symptoms that have not responded to psychotherapy and antidepressant medications. NeuroStar TMS therapy can help manage the symptoms of treatment resistant depression so you can fully engage in the activities that mean the most to you once again.

Because NeuroStar TMS is an outpatient treatment that does not require sedation, you can easily continue with your regular routine before and after your sessions. The treatment does not harm your memory or sleep. You can also avoid common side effects that often occur with antidepressant medications, such as fatigue, drowsiness, weight gain, nausea, and sexual concerns.

The majority of patients retain their response one-year post-TMS. For those patients who relapse, over 80% of them respond to a second round of TMS. The procedure is also covered by most health insurance plans, ensuring its accessibility to patients.

The Science Behind NeuroStar TMS Therapy

The goal of NeuroStar TMS therapy is to improve your brain chemistry by introducing short magnetic pulses to the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, the region responsible for regulating mood. This area is often less active in patients with depression than in those without this condition. The magnetic fields used in NeuroStar TMS therapy activate cells in the brain that release neurotransmitters, including dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin. These chemicals help create positive emotions like happiness, motivation, and excitement.

Because one potential cause of depression is an imbalance of these chemicals, ensuring that they are at a healthy level through NeuroStar Advanced TMS Therapy is beneficial for many patients whose symptoms have not responded to other treatment efforts.

Preparing for NeuroStar Advanced TMS Therapy

Your care team will explain what will happen during NeuroStar Advanced TMS therapy prior to your first session. The initial mapping process takes 30 minutes, and subsequent sessions are 18 minutes. Brain mapping allows your provider to determine the ideal treatment location and energy levels of TMS pulses to ensure it is optimized to your unique needs. During this process, a magnetic coil on the left side of your head delivers pulses to stimulate your motor cortex, the part of the brain responsible for regulating movement. The pulse will cause an involuntary twitch in your right hand, which will tell your provider which region of the brain is being stimulated.

You will remain awake, sitting in a comfortable chair. As the treatment coil delivers magnetic pulses, you’ll hear clicking sounds, and it can feel like a knocking, tapping, or tingling sensation on your head.
