The Benefits of TMS Therapy

TMS therapy should help most people suffering from major depressive disorder, OCD, and major depression with comorbid anxiety. Crucially, TMS offers an alternative for patients when other traditional treatments have failed. So is it really worth it for you to check out? Let's delve into the major benefits of TMS therapy.

Non-Invasive Treatment

The most prominent advantage associated with TMS therapy is that it is a non-invasive procedure. This means that no surgery or anesthesia is required, making it much safer than many other treatments. During a TMS session, a coil is placed on the scalp and delivers magnetic pulses to certain regions of the brain. The pulses activate those areas of the brain responsible for mood, and can therefore reduce symptoms over time. Since TMS does not involve any surgical procedure, patients resume their regular activities immediately following each session. This makes it a very accessible option for people leading busy lives without the ability to take extended recovery times.

Few Side Effects

Another major benefit of TMS therapy is there are minimal side effects compared to many medications. The common side effects one faces in taking medications may include gaining weight, sexual dysfunction, and tiredness. In contrast, TMS therapy is usually well-tolerated, and the most common possible side effect may be a mild sensation of discomfort on the scalp or headache during or after treatment. These usually go away within the first few sessions. Because TMS does not involve any drugs, it also bypasses systemic side effects that make drugs hard to continue for some patients.

No Systemic Effects

Unlike medication, which acts on the whole body, TMS therapy works locally to stimulate the areas of the brain responsible for mood regulation. This makes TMS more specific in treatment, with no wide-ranging effects caused by medications. For patients who have apprehensions about long-term intake of medicines and their side effects on the body, TMS offers them a different way of treating depression in a focused manner. It also means that the TMS therapy doesn't interfere with other medications a person might be taking for various health conditions.

Long-Lasting Results

For many patients, TMS therapy offers long-term symptom relief. Real-world studies have shown that 62% of patients said their depression symptoms went into remission after TMS therapy.

Safe and FDA-Cleared

TMS therapy is a safe and FDA-cleared treatment of major depressive disorder. The knowledge that the treatment has gone through various tests and was cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration instills confidence in the safety and effectiveness of TMS. It is often recommended for adults who have not found success with traditional treatments.
