How Long Does NeuroStar Last?

NeuroStar Logo
NeuroStar transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is an electromagnetic treatment protocol that addresses depression at its source: your brain. Unlike with many antidepressants, NeuroStar TMS is aimed directly at the area of the brain known to control mood disorders. While the treatment protocol is simple, safe, and effective for most people, there are some situations in which NeuroStar TMS may not be suitable. We encourage you to call our office today and schedule your intake appointment to learn more about how long NeuroStar TMS therapy will last once you have completed your treatment.

How Long Do the Results of NeuroStar Last?

The effectiveness of NeuroStar TMS treatment has been demonstrated in over 65 real-world, multisite, randomized controlled trials. Numerous scientific publications have also demonstrated the effectiveness of NeuroStar TMS therapy in real-world settings. Clinical data has shown that 83 percent of people who completed a full treatment had reduced symptoms and 62 percent achieved remission, meaning that their symptoms of depression were no longer evident. (Sackeim HA, et al. (2020). J Affective Disorders, 277(12):65-74.)

NeuroStar TMS therapy is recommended for people who have tried antidepressant medications without successfully alleviating their symptoms. Clinical data demonstrates that the results of NeuroStar TMS therapy treatment can last for up to a year in this group.

Several lifestyle choices may also be effective, such as balanced nutrition, gut microbiome health, exercise, and sleep quality. However, while experiencing the symptoms of depression, it can be difficult to make the lifestyle changes needed to experience good results. Undergoing NeuroStar TMS therapy can encourage better lifestyle choices that can potentially prolong the duration of the treatment’s effects.

When Can I Start Enjoying the Benefits of NeuroStar TMS?

Typically, you can expect to begin experiencing benefits, including a reduction in your symptoms of depression, after four to six weeks. Symptom reduction is generally most noticeable in the latter weeks of the treatment protocol. In addition, NeuroStar TMS is a noninvasive procedure that does not require anesthesia. This means that directly after treatment, you can go about your day as normal. There are fewer risks of systemic side effects that are commonly associated with antidepressant medications, such as weight gain, sexual dysfunction, sedation, or nausea.

The TMS treatment protocol is effective, with the results lasting up to a year, and it is a convenient outpatient procedure, with sessions lasting only about 19 minutes per day for seven weeks (or six weeks for OCD). If you later find that your symptoms are coming back, please talk to us about a potential retreatment plan.
