What is TMS Therapy?

NeuroStar TMS or Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation can be used to address obsessive-compulsive disorder, as well as major depressive disorder and anxious depression. In TMS therapy, trained specialists use magnetic pulses along the top of your head to stimulate parts of the brain. With growing evidence available on the effectiveness of TMS treatments, the FDA has cleared the use of certain TMS devices and pulse frequencies for the treatment of OCD. At our office in Arlington, Virginia, we have knowledgeable, trained TMS technicians who can answer any question you have about this therapy and will be available to you throughout your sessions.

Addressing OCD With TMS

NeuroStar TMS therapy is non-surgical and non-invasive, and can be conducted in an office setting on an outpatient basis. When receiving TMS, you sit comfortably in a chair and will have a device with magnetic coils placed on your head. When it is activated, you will hear clicking sounds and feel tapping sensations on your head. Most patients receiving TMS therapy experience few side effects, with the most common being headache, tingling sensations, and slight discomfort at the site of the pulses, generally resolving within a day.

A TMS session lasts around 19 minutes and you should anticipate coming to the office for five sessions a week, for six weeks, to ensure the effects persist after your full course of TMS therapy. You may feel relief from your OCD symptoms as early as one month following the start of TMS therapy.
