About

Nelia is passionate about outpatient preventive measures and the continuity of mental health care in a community setting.

Her main areas of interest are the prevention of acute exacerbation of psychiatric symptoms like psychosis, mania, hypomania, EPS, and catatonia and managing chronic conditions like bipolar disorder, schizoaffective disorder, depression, ADHD/ADD, and others. She aims to provide comprehensive care by emphasizing coordination of care with family, primary care providers, psychotherapists, and other members of the health care team.

Education & Experience

Nelia Sarmiento is a Board Certified Physician Assistant (PA-C). She graduated from the Towson University/CCBC Essex, Baltimore Collaborative Physician Assistant Program in 2018. Prior to becoming a Physician Assistant, she worked as a Registered Nurse in med-surg for more than 15 years.

Nelia is a certified Foreign Medical Graduate and a licensed Physician from the Philippines. She also completed her Master in Public Health (MPH) from Morgan State University in 2011. She had psychiatry externships in Sheppard Pratt Health System and MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center in 2009. She worked in inpatient psychiatry in Northwest Hospital (NWH) and was responsible for the assessment, management, and discharge planning of psychiatric patients in the ER, medical floor consults, and patients in behavioral units. She was also responsible for decision-making regarding patients referred to NWH from other ER and hospitals in Maryland and out-of-state facilities.
